Founded in 2001, Steep Creek Stoneworks was born from the creative journey of its founder, Cody Macfie. After earning a degree in English Creative Writing and spending several years as a news reporter, magazine writer, and author of two books, Cody decided to pursue a new avenue of creativity—stone masonry—a craft passed down from his father.
The decision to transition into this field came from a desire to combine his artistic inclinations with the hands-on, tangible work of shaping stone into beautiful, functional pieces. Cody Macfie
Cody Macfie is a stonemason and business owner based in North Carolina, recognized for his expertise in stonework. With over 25 years of experience, he founded several businesses, including Steep Creek Stoneworks, French Broad Stone Yards, and Hoopers Creek Stone. His companies specialize in stone construction and material supply, catering to both residential and commercial projects, and have grown significantly under his leadership, employing over 50 people. He is known for his distinctive style that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, creating both rustic and refined stonework for homes and landscapes. His projects showcase his approach to integrating natural materials in ways that harmonize with architectural designs and surrounding environments.
Scotty Warren
Born in Brevard and raised in Hendersonville, NC, Scotty Warren is a second-generation stonemason with 36 years of experience in the masonry industry. His passion for the craft began early, working alongside his father, who established their family masonry business in 1988 when Scotty was just 13. Spending weekends and summers honing his skills, he developed a deep understanding of stonework and craftsmanship. In 2015, Scotty joined Steep Creek and now oversees the company's day-to-day operations, ensuring quality and excellence in every project. Residing in Fairview, NC, he enjoys traveling with his wife and kids. In his free time, you’ll find him on the disc golf course or deer hunting in the great outdoors.
Jason Shook
Jason Shook, a native of Brevard, NC, comes from a family of skilled brick and stonemasons. Although he didn’t begin working with stone alongside his father until 2000, he quickly developed a passion for the craft. He ran his own stonework business for 15 years before joining Steep Creek Stoneworks in 2017. Known for his keen eye for detail, Jason values the unique artistic style of each mason. Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors, playing golf, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Brandon Shook
Brandon Shook, a native of Brevard, NC, is a multi-generational mason, with experience laying block, brick, and stone. With a deep passion for his craft, he thrives in all aspects of stonework, from project management to overseeing the transformation of each project from start to finish. Beyond his work, Brandon enjoys immersing himself in nature through hunting, fishing, camping, and mountain biking.
Estela Amaya
Estela Amaya was raised in Anaheim, California. After earning an Associate’s degree in Business Administration and Bookkeeping from Fullerton College, she worked as a freelance project manager and bookkeeper for general contractors. In 2021, she relocated to Asheville, NC, and joined the Steep Creek Stoneworks team in 2022. Since then, Estela has played a key role in employee development, bilingual communication, and account management while leading the Accounting and Human Resources departments. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking and spending time with her family and three dogs.
Jenn Palma
Jenn Palma grew up in Asheville, NC, and graduated from Enka High School in 2014. Her professional background includes experience in healthcare as a patient services representative, where she specialized in billing, insurance management, and patient enrollment. She approaches every project with focus, a positive attitude, and strong problem-solving skills. Adaptable and dedicated, she takes pride in her work. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in nature and at the lake with her daughter and two dogs.
